For those with only one or two days to
do a safari, Arusha National Park is the most obvious choice. Located
just 15 miles from Arusha. It is also the home of Mt. Meru, Tanzanias
second highest peak (14,980 ft). On clear days, excellent views of Mt.
Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,340 ft), the
highest peak in Africa, can be seen throughout the park.
Arusha also contains the Momela Lakes,
which is the best place to see many of the 400 plus species of birds
in the park. Each of the lakes has a slightly different color due to
the different types of algae in them. Animals such as zebra, elephants,
hyena, hippos, buffalo and warthogs are commonly sighted, but there
are no lions or rhinos here due to poaching.
