Kilimanjaro Adventures and our customers continually offer warm gear to the Porters Association in Moshi. We're recently sent jackets, hats and hiking boots.

You can help too

Mountain and camping equipment are not readily available in Tanzania. Even if it were available, many of the porters and guides don't have the money to buy the proper equipment.  Nighttime temperatures drop below freezing at even the lowest camps. At the higher elevations, sudden hail or snowstorms can move in quickly, sending everyone (including climbers) into hypothermia if they are not dressed properly. It is our goal at Kilimanjaro Adventures to make sure that every guide and porter on the mountain has the proper clothing and equipment to do their jobs.

When you donate your used gear, it will be given to the local guides and porters to use while they are on the mountain to ensure their safety and yours.

What's Needed?

  • 4 season tents with standard steel poles
  • Sleeping bags (preferably rated to 15 degrees or warmer)
  • Shell pants and jackets
  • Down jackets
  • Fleece jackets
  • Woolen hats
  • Gloves/mittens
  • Thermal  underwear (tops and bottoms)
  • Wool socks
  • Good hiking boots - many wear flip flops or running shoes with little support.  One porter was seen with baseball cleats on the summit attempt
  • First aid kits
  • Emergency shelter blankets
  • Gaiters

Men's and women's gear is fine. There are no points for style on the mountain.

How to Donate

If going on a future trip, the easiest and most rewarding way is to donate your items in person. Let us know that you're interested in this option and we will give you all the necessary information. If you do this, you may also have more luck in getting a sponsor for your trip.

Ask your guide to make sure the porters have enough warm clothes to be safe on the mountain. Some porters dress in rags to get better tips.
