Frequently Asked Questions:
When is the best time to go?
- July - Sept. and Dec.- Feb.
are best. [more info]
How physically fit do I need
to be?
- If you can run 2 miles consistently
you can hike Kilimanjaro. You may not be able to reach the summit, but
you should be able to enjoy the trekking portion. Training information
will be sent with your welcome kit.
Is it safe?
- Last year over 20,000 people
attempted to climb Kilimanjaro and there were approximately 10 fatalities
from altitude, hypothermia and rock fall. We want you to return safely,
so we work hard to make sure you're prepared enough with the right safety
information and the right gear.
Which is the best route for
me?
Why should I choose Kilimanjaro
Adventures?
- In partnering with our local
outfitter we send about 7,000 people a year up the mountain. We have
14 years of experience. We're in North America and can easily explain
what to expect and answer any questions
you might have.
What is included in the climb
price?
- 2 nights accommodation at a Bed
and Breakfast in Moshi
- All meals on the mountain
- Certified and qualified guides for all
routes
- Guides and porters salaries
- National Park gate fees
- Transport to and from Moshi
- Hut or camping fees and tents
- Rescue fees
- Transfer to and from Kilimanjaro Airport
Why are your prices so cheap?
- All our guides and porters
are from Tanzania, greatly reducing our costs. We also don't have a
big name like REI or National Geographic. If you want someone to carry
your toilet for you, you probably don't want us.
Can I climb with others to
reduce the costs?
- Whenever possible we will
try to schedule single climbers with other groups to reduce costs. However,
it really depends on your schedule and what routes other climbers are
planning to take at the same time.
What is the best way to get
to Kilimanjaro?
- The easiest way is to fly
from the US and transfer in Europe to arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport.
You can also fly into Nairobi or Dar es Salaam and take a shuttle bus
to Moshi. [More info]
- For safety
reasons we recommend you try to fly into Tanzania airports (Kilimanjaro
or Dar Es Salaam).
What kind of gear do I need?
- Plan to be wet, dry, hot
(up to 90s) and cold (below freezing). We provide you with a complete
gear list.
Can I rent gear?
- Yes, you can rent almost
everything in Moshi. Tents, gaiters, poles, and more are all available
there.
How cold does it usually get
on the mountain?
- Days can get up to 80 degrees
and it can drop below freezing in the clouds, at night, and on the summit.
[More info]
Do the guides speak English?
- Yes, all of our guides speak
English.
Do I need an extra day to acclimate?
- We would highly recommend
it. Some statistics say only 1 in 10 reaches the summit. Altitude is
the biggest factor in this. If you already live at altitude and have
a lot of experience you may not need this. But if you live below 3,000
feet it will really help.
