Climbing Routes

To choose a route, pick which describes you best:

It's ALL about the summit.
Rongai and Machame routes have the highest success rates. With a more gradual ascent you acclimate better and are more likely to make it.

The journey is more important than the destination.
Machame, Lemosho and Rongai routes are beautiful climbs. Each gives you the chance to explore numerous sides to Kilimanjaro and the various eco-zones it offers.

I ain't sleeping in no tent for 6 days.
Sleep in huts on the Marangu route. In fact, one camp is located right in the rain forest. So you get to share your climb with the resident monkeys!

I want the most intense experience possible.
Umbwe route has the most intense and direct route. It is a fast, straight shot right up the mountain.

Easiest Routes

  • Marangu (a.k.a. the "Tourist Route") follows a direct line up a ridge line to the top of Kilimanjaro. You can sleep in huts and even buy beer, coke, chocolates and other goodies along the way.
  • Rongai offers a more gentle grade of ascent. You start on the North, drier side of Kilimanjaro and sleep in tents.

Moderate Routes

  • Machame (a.k.a. the "Whiskey Route") takes longer and has some difficult days. However, it gives you more time to acclimate and offers some stunning views. It also has one of the highest success rates.
  • Shira and Lemosho start on the West side before meeting the Machame route at the Shira camp after a few days. They also offers more time to acclimate and stunning views.

Least Traveled Route

  • Rongai ascends on the Northern side of Kilimanjaro and gets very little traffic. You then descend via the Marangu route and get to see more rain forest

Most Difficult Routes

  • Umbwe skips the acclimation sections from the moderate climbs (Machame, Shira and Lemosho) and shoots straight up the mountain.

Some climbers reach the summit before sunrise. It's a cold wait for the sun.

There are many routes to the top. We can help you choose the right one for you.

The summit ascent is 5+ hours of scree and switchbacks to the top
