Leopards

Leopards are mostly nocturnal, making it very hard to spot them during the day. Look for them on the flatter branches of the yellow bark acacia and "Sausage" trees.

Leopards are often confused with cheetah. Although both are spotted, the leopards spots are in clusters while the cheetah has single, solid spots. Also, the cheetah have a distinctive black line down their faces that is perhaps the easiest way to differentiate between the two.

Leopards are solitary, secretive and nocturnal. They spend most of their days in the branches of sausage or acacia trees. The trees also serve as a safe place for the game they have killed, offering protection from lions and hyenas.

Most often, your view of a leopard will be through the branches of a tree. In the Serengeti, look carefully in the trees near the Seronera river or other water areas. Ngorongoro Crater also has a lot of trees along the canyon that offers good viewing opportunities.

Leopards carry their prey into the branches of a tree to protect it from other predators like lions, hyenas and vultures
