Lions

This young male lion was left to guard the water buffalo the pride had taken the night before.

Who doesn't want to see a lion? These magnificent animals are beautiful and fierce, commanding the respect of humans and animals alike. They live in prides of up to 30 members, with the lionesses doing most of the hunting while the males protect the pride and its territory. They normally prey upon wildebeest, zebras and water buffalo.

The best place to see lions in large numbers is the Serengeti. In the Seronera area, it's possible to see prides of 20 plus members lying nearby. During the wildebeest migration, lions will be hanging around the perimeter, waiting for an opportunity to attack a newborn calf. Ngorongoro Crater also has a large number of resident lions. If you want to see the tree-climbing lions, Lake Manyara is the place to go. No one knows for sure why the lions climb acacia trees in this park, but it is worth it if you're lucky enough to see one.

The male lion's job is to protect the pride from invaders. He does not hunt.

The female lion is responsible for hunting and raising the cubs

Lions like the shade provided by jeeps. Here's a small tip for you, don't stick your head too far out the window!
