Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the most beautiful
places you'll ever visit. Nestled above the lush Ngorongoro Highlands
and next to the Serengeti plain, this area offers a feast for the senses.
The government has successfully managed to balance the Maasai's traditional
way of life while conserving nature. It's common to see the Maasai wearing
their bright red blankets as they graze their cattle next to zebras
and lions.
The beauty of the Ngorongoro Crater (actually
a caldera) is unsurpassed. Home to 25,000 animals, the crater boasts
forests, canyons, lakes, marshes, grasslands, and plains. You can see
all of the "Big 5" here, especially rhinos. Due to anti-poaching
patrols, the number of black rhinos in the park has increased, with
almost 20 animals. That may not seem like a large number, but in the
Serengeti, rhinos are so rare, that they are under armed guard and are
not visible by the public.
The conservation area is one of the few
places that you can do a walking safari.
Although not allowed to walk in the crater, there are many areas to
explore outside of it. Favorite spots to visit are Lake Natron, Embakaai
Crater and Oldonyo Lengai volcano.
